If you have ever bought a pair of shoes that looked perfect in the box and felt like a vice by lunchtime, you are not alone. Many women find that shoes made in a single "standard" width simply do not match the shape of their feet. The good news is that finding shoes for wide feet is much easier once you understand what actually causes the pinch, and which details to look for before you buy.
This guide walks through why standard shoes press on wider feet, how width labels work, why toe box and volume matter, and what to look at when shopping online in the UAE.
Why standard shoes pinch
Most mainstream shoes are built on a medium-width shape. If your foot is wider across the ball, higher across the top of the foot (the instep), or both, the shoe has nowhere to give. The result is pressure on the sides of the foot, the little toe or the top of the foot, even when the length feels right.
A few everyday factors make this worse in the Gulf:
- Warm weather. Feet can feel fuller after a long day on your feet or after time outdoors, so a shoe that felt fine in the morning can feel tight by the evening.
- Pointed or narrow fashion shapes. Sleek styles often sacrifice room at the front of the shoe.
- Buying by length only. Going up a full size to gain width usually leaves the heel loose and the shoe too long.
If you have persistent pain, swelling, bunions or any condition affecting your feet, please speak to a doctor, podiatrist or physiotherapist. A shoe can make daily wear more comfortable, but it is not a substitute for medical advice.
Width labels and what they mean
Width is usually shown as a letter or letters after the size. Brands do not all label in exactly the same way, so always read the labels on the specific product page rather than assuming.
On the BILLY Footwear women's styles at FARID HUB, the widths shown on product pages are:
- B – Women Medium
- D – Women Wide
- 3E – Women Extra-Wide
That means one style can be ordered in three widths within the same size, which is helpful if your feet are wider than average. Sizes are listed in EU with US equivalents, so you can use the size guide to convert.
If you are between sizes, or between widths, do not guess. Compare your foot length and the widest part of your foot with the size chart, then message us on WhatsApp for help. Our guide to sizing adaptive footwear with confidence also explains how to measure at home.
Toe box and volume
Width is only part of the story. Two other things decide whether a shoe feels roomy or restrictive:
The toe box
The toe box is the front section of the shoe. A roomy, rounded toe box lets your toes spread naturally. A tapered one squeezes them together, even if the width label says "wide".
Overall volume and depth
Volume is the total space inside the shoe, including height over the instep. Higher-volume shoes suit fuller feet, and also leave room for an orthotic or insole if your clinician has recommended one. Shoes with removable insoles let you adjust depth by taking an insole out or adding one. Check each product page to see how many removable insoles come with the shoe.
A closure that opens fully also helps. When the upper opens wide, you can place your foot in without squeezing past a narrow opening, then adjust the laces to suit the day.

Fit tips
- Measure late in the day, when feet are at their fullest, and measure both feet. Use the larger one.
- Pick the width first, then the length. A wider width in your usual size is often more comfortable than a bigger size in a standard width.
- Try the shoe with the socks or insoles you will actually wear.
- Leave a little room in front of the longest toe, and check that your heel does not slip.
- Walk around indoors on a clean surface before deciding to keep them. Our returns policy covers unworn items within 14 days of delivery, so keep them unworn until you are sure.
- Ask for help. Delivery across the UAE is free on orders above AED 500, and we are happy to talk through sizing on WhatsApp.

FAQ
What is the difference between wide and extra-wide? Wide gives more room across the ball and top of the foot than medium, and extra-wide gives more again. On our women's styles these are labelled D (Wide) and 3E (Extra-Wide), as shown on each product page.
Should I size up to get more room? Not usually. A larger size adds length, which can make your heel slip. Choosing a wider width in your regular size is generally the better approach.
Can wide-fit shoes be worn with insoles or orthotics? Many styles have removable insoles, which makes extra room for an orthotic your clinician has advised. Always check the product page and ask your orthotist or doctor what suits you.
