Summer in the UAE is long and hot, and for children and adults who wear braces or orthotics, it can be hard on the feet. Add a plastic brace, socks and closed shoes, and feet can feel warm and sticky within minutes. This guide offers general ideas for choosing breathable shoes for braces in summer, from materials to socks to daily habits.
It is general information, not medical advice. If you or your child has skin irritation, pain or concerns about how a brace is fitting in the heat, please talk to your doctor, orthotist or physiotherapist.
Why heat and braces make feet uncomfortable
A few things come together in summer:
- Heat and humidity. Feet naturally sweat, and in a hot, humid climate there is less relief.
- Layers. A brace, a sock and a closed shoe add up to several layers around the foot and ankle.
- Less airflow. Closed shoes limit the air that can reach the skin.
- Swelling. Some people find feet swell more in the heat, so a shoe that was comfortable in winter can feel snug.
- Hot surfaces. Outdoor ground and car interiors can get very hot.
You cannot change the weather, but you can make sensible choices about materials, socks and routine. Many families also find that the air-conditioned indoors and the heat of the outdoors create quick swings in temperature, which can add to discomfort.
Materials: mesh vs leather
Neither material is "best" for everyone. They behave differently.
Mesh
Mesh uppers have small openings that let air move through the shoe, so they often feel lighter and cooler. They also tend to be lighter in weight. On the other hand, mesh can let in dust and sand, and may offer less structure than leather or thick materials.
Leather and leather-look materials
Leather can look smarter and give more structure, and some people find it holds its shape well. It usually allows less airflow than open mesh. Some products combine materials. For example, according to its product page, the Princepard children's shoe uses breathable microfiber leather and mesh.
What to check on the product page
Look for words such as "breathable mesh upper", note the lining material, and check whether the shoe has a padded collar and removable insoles. We describe materials only as listed by the manufacturer on each product page, and we cannot promise that a shoe will keep feet dry.
Socks and skin comfort (general tips)
These are everyday comfort ideas, not medical advice.
- Choose socks that suit the shoe. Thin, breathable socks are often more comfortable in summer than thick ones, but check that they leave enough room for any brace or insert.
- Avoid rough seams. Socks with flat or minimal seams can feel gentler on sensitive skin.
- Change socks when they are damp. A spare pair in the school bag or handbag is easy to carry.
- Keep feet clean and dry. Wash and dry feet carefully, including between the toes.
- Check the skin. Especially for children and for anyone with reduced sensation, look at the feet after a day in a brace. If you notice redness that does not fade, sores or blisters, contact your doctor or orthotist.
- Do not make changes to a brace yourself. Ask your orthotist about any adjustments.

Remember that "summer-friendly" depends on the child, the brace and how long they spend outside. A light, well-fitted shoe is usually more comfortable than a heavy one.
A word about fit in summer
If feet swell in the heat, consider checking the fit in the afternoon, and look for styles that allow adjustment. Removable insoles and adjustable closures can help you add or remove a little room. Our size guide explains how to measure, including over a brace.
Daily routine: air-dry and rotate
Simple habits can make shoes more pleasant to wear and help them last.
- Air the shoes after wear. Take them off, open them fully, and let them dry in a ventilated spot out of the sun.
- Take out removable insoles to dry, if the product allows. Put them back once they are fully dry.
- Rotate pairs where you can. Having two pairs lets each dry between wears.
- Do not leave shoes in a hot car. Heat can be unkind to materials and glue.
- Wipe mesh gently with a soft damp cloth and follow any care instructions that come with the shoes.
- Plan breaks. For children in braces, short breaks in the shade or in air conditioning, as advised by their specialist, may help them feel more comfortable.

FAQ
Is mesh better than leather for summer? Mesh usually feels more airy, but the best choice depends on your child's brace, the fit and how the shoe is used. Neither is guaranteed to prevent sweating.
Can my child wear socks with a brace in summer? Many do, but the right sock depends on the brace and the shoe. Ask your orthotist what they recommend.
Why do my child's feet feel hot in a brace? Braces, socks and shoes add layers, and the UAE climate is hot. If the skin looks irritated, speak to your doctor or orthotist.
