AFO Shoes FAQ: 15 Questions Parents Ask

Child with leg braces wearing dark grey BILLY Classic D|R II high-tops, AFO shoes questions parents ask

If your child has just been prescribed an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), shoe shopping suddenly feels more complicated. These are the AFO shoes questions parents ask us most often, with practical answers. They describe how shoes are designed and how to shop. They are not medical advice, so please check anything clinical with your child's doctor, orthotist or physiotherapist.

Basics: what, why, who

1. What is an AFO? An AFO is an ankle-foot orthosis, a brace worn on the lower leg and foot. A clinician prescribes it and an orthotist usually makes or fits it. Your care team can explain why your child uses one.

2. What does "AFO-friendly" mean on FARID HUB? It is a label we use for shoes whose design suits wearing a brace: more width and depth, removable insoles and an opening that lets the foot and brace go in easily. It describes design. It is not a medical claim, and it does not promise a fit with every brace.

3. Can any shoe fit an AFO? Often not. Many everyday shoes are narrow, shallow or have a small opening, so the brace has to be forced in. Shoes built for braces are a better starting point, and you should always try them with the brace on, indoors.

Shoes: size, width, depth, insoles

4. What size shoe for an AFO? Start with your child's foot length and the size guide, then ask your clinician whether the brace needs extra room. Some families find they need a larger size or a wider width than usual. Because brands differ, please check our size guide and message us if you are between sizes.

5. Do I need wide shoes? Not always, but width is one of the first things to check. Many BILLY kids' styles come in Medium, Wide and Extra Wide, and several product pages describe extra room in the toe box and heel area. If your child's current shoes pinch at the sides, try a wider width before moving up a size.

6. Why does depth matter? A brace takes up room inside the shoe. A deeper shoe lets the foot sit comfortably rather than being pushed up against the top. Several BILLY styles include removable insoles, so you can take them out to add depth. Always follow your orthotist's guidance about which insoles to use.

7. Should I remove the insoles? Many parents do, to make space for the brace. Some product pages mention two removable 3mm insoles for depth adjustment, and the Limitless style lists two extra spacer insoles. Check the product page for what each style includes, and ask your clinician before changing anything if your child uses a prescribed orthotic.

Closures and independence

8. Which closure is easiest? It depends on who is putting the shoe on. BILLY's Full Wrap zipper opens the shoe wide, and the adjustable laces let you fine-tune the fit. Some styles also include an extra-wide loop pull for those with limited dexterity, such as the Lilac Watercolor Limitless, which also describes a sensory-friendly lining.

9. Can my child put the shoes on alone? Many children can build independence with a wide opening and a pull loop, but it varies with age, strength and ability. Practise at home, without a rush, and ask your occupational therapist or physiotherapist for tips.

10. Are the shoes comfortable for sensitive feet? Some styles are described as sensory-friendly, with a stitch-and-turn lining that creates a nearly seamless tongue and zipper guard. Every child is different, so try them indoors first and watch for any irritation.

Buying: delivery, returns, help

11. Is delivery free in the UAE? Delivery is free on UAE orders above AED 500. We also ship across the GCC, with estimates shown at checkout.

12. What if the shoes do not fit with the brace? Unworn items can be returned within 14 days of delivery, so try the shoes on indoors only, on a clean surface, and contact us quickly if the fit is wrong. Please read the latest terms on the FAQs page.

When to ask a clinician

Some questions are for your care team, not for a shoe shop. Ask your doctor, orthotist or physiotherapist if your child:

  • complains of pain, rubbing or red marks after wearing shoes with the brace;
  • has changes in how they walk, or the brace seems to have become tight;
  • is growing quickly and the brace or shoe size may need to be reviewed.

Bring the brace with you when you shop if you can, or share its measurements, and let your clinician's advice take priority.

More questions

13. How often should we check the fit? Children's feet grow fast, so check often, for example by feeling for pressure points and watching for red marks. Ask your clinician how frequently to review the fit with the brace.

14. Do these shoes come in adult sizes? Yes. FARID HUB also carries adaptive and AFO-friendly shoes for men and women, with product pages that show the available widths and sizes.

15. Where can I get help choosing? Message us on WhatsApp with your child's foot length, the width you think you need and a note about the brace. We will help you choose a size and compatible style.
